Sembawang Engineers and Constructors (Sembawang) was established in 1982 to undertake various key national development projects by the Singapore government.
Sembawang’s history weaves like a tapestry through that of Singapore and our footprints can be found in every aspect of the development of Singapore. From the construction of Changi International Airport to the road networks, the Mass Rapit Transit Systems (MRTs), the Light Rail Transit Systems (LRTs), the Deep Tunnel Sewage System (DTSS), the Underground Storage Caverns, iconic buildings, leisure and industrial developments, Sembawang has planned, managed and constructed them all. Today, it has grown to become one of the largest Engineering and Construction contractor in Southeast Asia.
In May 2006, Sembawang, together with its wholly-owned subsidiaries, was acquired by Punj Lloyd, a leading engineering, procurement, construction specialist. This acquisition enhanced the Group’s portfolio and today it comprises Punj Lloyd, headquartered in India, Sembawang in Singapore and Simon Carves in UK. Punj Lloyd is listed on the National and Bombay Stock Exchange.
Sembawang operates a fully integrated, multi-discipline design organization with a complete range of engineering skills. Services range from feasibility studies, through front-end design, to complete detailed design and procurement. In addition, we also offer services ranging from preliminary scheduling and assistance in meeting public agency requirements, to construction and site development. In short, Sembawang is able to take customer’s projects from conception to completion.
Today, Sembawang’s strategy is to focus on and further develop its core competencies in the Buildings, Utilities and Infrastructure sectors. CDC – Construction & Development was incorporated.
1988
Awarded first overseas project in China, Tianjin International Building.
1990
Awarded first industrial park development project in Batam, Indonesia
1992
Full-fledged in-house, multi-disciplinary design consultancy was incorporated as Design Team.
1993
First construction company to be certified ISO 9002 in Singapore by Lloyds Register Quality Assurance Ltd (UK).
1994
Ventured into precast concrete business with the setting up of precast manufacturing plants in Bintan (Indonesia) and Wuxi (China).
Spearheaded Wuxi Singapore Industrial Park project in China.
China JV company, Sin-Ke (Tianjin) Construction Engineering Co, formed in China.
1996
Entered into a Joint Venture agreement in India to form ST Infrastructure Technologies (India).
1998
Incorporated in 1998, SembCorp Construction was formed with the merger of two public-listed corporations – Singapore Technologies industrial Corporation and Sembawang Corporation.
1999
SembCorp Construction acquired Petrochemical and Industrial Unit (PCI) from SembCorp Utilities to expand our capabilities in process business.
2001
Acquired UK-based process engineering consultant, Simon-Carves.
2006
Acquired by Punj Lloyd Group.
2007
Entered into a Joint Venture Agreement with Capital Industries and Investments (CII) to form Sembawang Precast Systems LLC.
Was awarded project in Bahrain with GPZ (SECME-GPZ JV) to build 330 villas in the prestigious residential development, Riffa Views.
